A component of the Guam Cancer Care Organization’s Education Outreach Program, and with the support of Triple J Motors, the GetFitGUAM Program aims to motivate people of all ages and levels of fitness in Guam to become more physically active by providing free and accessible ways to get moving. Sadly, according to a study conducted over a five-year period by the John Hopkins University Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Undeserved, Guam students have an obesity rate much higher (23%) than the national average. It’s not a better scenario with adults with obesity at 27% of the population according to a 2014 report from Trust for America’s Health (TFAH) and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF).

Regular physical activity not only makes you look and feel great, it has many benefits that help manage and improve overall health. Aerobic exercise such as Zumba or Boot Camp can help to improve your heart health and endurance, aiding in weight loss. Strength training like weight training or Cross-Fit can improve muscle strength and endurance, making it easier to do daily activities, slow disease-related declines in muscle strength, and provide stability to joints. Flexibility exercises and stability such as yoga may help you to gain optimal range of motion in your joints and help reduce the risk of falls by improving balance.

By partnering and collaborating with, but not limited to, dance studios, fitness clubs, villages, fitness organizations and other fitness professionals or athletes to either create or leverage existing activities and offer it free to all, Guam Cancer Care hopes to improve these numbers. The ultimate goal is to make physical fitness a regular part of an individual’s routine by creating a single and unified physical activity campaign, which will lead to and contribute to a healthier lifestyle thereby reducing the risk of obesity, cancer, and other non-communicable diseases.
